You look at Google Analytics and the visits are there: a few thousand a month, growing. Then you open the booking engine and bookings are the same as ever — few. Where do all those people go?

When a hotel website isn't converting, there's almost never just one problem. It's usually a series of small frictions that, one after another, convince the guest to close the page. Here are 10 checks to make, in order of importance.

1. Are they the right visits?

First, check where visits come from. If much of your traffic comes from:

  • people looking for hotel jobs;
  • users from countries that aren't your market;
  • guests who've already booked and want your address or phone number;
  • bots and low-quality traffic;

then your conversion rate will look low, but the problem isn't the website. In GA4, check sources, countries and landing pages.

2. Speed on smartphones

Open your website on your phone using mobile data. If it takes more than 3 seconds to show something useful, you're losing part of your visitors before they even see the hotel. Google's PageSpeed Insights gives you a free analysis. Typical causes: oversized images, homepage sliders, too many plugins.

3. The "Book" button

It must be visible at all times, on every page, even when scrolling on mobile. A colour that stands out, clear text ("Check availability" or "Book now"), no menu to open to find it.

4. The first screen

In the first few seconds guests need to understand: where you are, what kind of hotel you are, who you're right for and why choose you. If the first screen is just a pretty photo with a generic slogan, guests have to dig. And they often won't. See what to write on a hotel homepage to get bookings.

5. The photos

They're the number one selection criterion. Dark, old, badly cropped photos — or worse, photos that don't match the real rooms — lower trust and conversion. Deep dive: which photos a three-star hotel website needs.

6. Prices and conditions

Guests want to know how much they'll spend, what's included and what happens if they cancel. If this information is hidden or only appears at the end, they leave. Check:

  • clear prices from the start;
  • city tax, parking and extras shown before payment;
  • cancellation terms written simply.

7. The comparison with OTAs

Many guests open your website and Booking.com in two tabs. If your price is the same or higher, and there's no perk, they book on the portal. Compare every week.

8. The booking engine

Make a test booking on mobile. Count steps, mandatory fields and pop-ups. Make sure it doesn't open in a new window with completely different branding. If the booking engine gets lots of searches but few bookings, that's where the problem is: why users abandon the booking process on your hotel website.

9. Trust

Visible reviews, clear contact details, photos of the staff, a security certificate (https), legal information in order, registration codes displayed where required: small signals that tell guests they can trust you. See how to tell if your hotel website builds trust.

10. Alternatives to booking online

Not everyone wants to book straight away. Some have a question, others want a quote for a large family. Offer a simple alternative: WhatsApp, a tap-to-call number, a short form. And reply fast. Deep dive: WhatsApp or booking engine: which path to offer on your hotel website?.

How to proceed

Don't fix everything blindly. Do this:

  1. measure your starting point (visits, clicks on "Book", bookings);
  2. fix the most serious problems first (speed, button, prices);
  3. wait 4–6 weeks and compare with the same period;
  4. move on to the next item.

Frequently asked questions

What's a normal conversion rate for a hotel?

The most-quoted benchmarks put the average at 1.5–2.5% of visits, higher on desktop and lower on mobile. But what matters most is comparing yourself with yourself over time.

Do I need to rebuild my website from scratch?

Not always. Targeted work on speed, copy, photos and the booking engine is often enough. More in redo your hotel website or improve the one you have.

How long before I see improvements?

Technical and pricing fixes show results within weeks, with the same traffic.
