Your guest isn't sitting at a desk. They're on the sofa after dinner, in a queue at the post office, on a train. They have a smartphone in hand, five minutes to spare and three hotels open. The first one that makes life easy wins.

Today most hotel website visits come from mobile, yet smartphone conversion remains much lower than desktop: benchmarks put it at 0.5–1.5% versus 2.5–3.5%, with more frequent abandonment. Part of the gap is normal (people browse more and book less on mobile), but part is down to avoidable obstacles. Here are the 12 most common on a hotel website on mobile.

1. The site is slow

Every extra second of loading loses visitors. Typical causes: 5 MB photos uploaded without compression, background videos, heavy sliders, too many scripts. Check with PageSpeed Insights.

2. A pop-up covers everything

The cookie banner, then the newsletter, then the special offer, then the chat. On a small screen, every pop-up is a wall. Keep only the (mandatory) cookie banner and make sure it doesn't cover the booking button.

3. The "Book" button disappears

On desktop it's top right, but on mobile it ends up inside the hamburger menu. Fix: a sticky bar at the bottom with "Book" and, next to it, "Call" or "WhatsApp".

4. The first screen says nothing

A full-screen photo with a logo and no text. Guests have to scroll to understand where you are and what kind of hotel you are. Put in the first screen: location, type of hotel, one perk and the button.

5. Tiny text and buttons too close together

If guests have to zoom to read or tap the wrong link, they get annoyed. Readable text, large and well-spaced buttons.

6. An awkward calendar

Calendars that don't scroll well, dates hard to select, next month hidden. The calendar is the heart of the booking: try it yourself, with your thumb.

7. The booking engine opens somewhere else

Tapping "Book" opens a new tab with different branding, sometimes in another language. Guests think they've landed on the wrong site. The booking engine should look like part of your website.

8. Too many form fields

First name, surname, email, confirm email, phone, address, postcode, city, country, date of birth… On mobile it's a nightmare. Ask only for what you really need to confirm.

9. Prices and taxes that change at the end

The price grows at the last step because of city tax, parking or extras. On mobile, guests won't go back to figure it out: they close. Show everything clearly from the start.

10. Awkward payments

If the only option is typing a 16-digit card number, you'll lose some people. Apple Pay, Google Pay and digital wallets make things much easier on smartphones, if your booking engine supports them.

11. Phone number and address not tappable

The phone number should start a call with one tap; the address should open maps. It sounds obvious, but many sites don't do it.

12. No alternative for people with a question

On mobile, many people would rather message on WhatsApp than fill in a form. Offer that option — and reply quickly. See WhatsApp or booking engine: which path to offer on your hotel website?.

The thumb test

Every month do this exercise, or ask a friend who doesn't know the site:

  1. open the website on a smartphone using mobile data;
  2. find a room for two adults for a weekend next month;
  3. get as far as the payment page;
  4. time it and note every moment of hesitation.

If it takes more than two minutes or there are more than two hesitations, you've found your obstacles.

Frequently asked questions

How many hotel bookings come from mobile?

It depends on your guests. Many visits come from mobile, but some guests search on their phone and then book on a computer. That's why it also matters that your site is consistent across devices.

Does my hotel need an app?

For an independent hotel, almost never. A well-built mobile website and good use of WhatsApp cover most guests' needs.
