The guest looked at the photos, chose dates, opened the booking engine, selected a room… and then nothing. They closed the page. It's the most painful loss, because they were one step away from confirming.

Booking abandonment is huge across travel: industry benchmarks suggest that around 8 out of 10 travel bookings started online are never completed. Some of it is natural (people just comparing), but some can be recovered. Here's how.

First distinction: natural abandoners

Not every abandonment is a problem. Many users:

  • are just checking prices and availability;
  • need to talk it over with their partner or family;
  • are comparing several hotels before deciding;
  • are planning a trip that's still far off.

You'll never eliminate these entirely. The goal is to reduce the abandonments caused by your website and recover the people who were genuinely interested.

The most common causes (and fixes)

1. Unexpected costs at the end

It's the most-cited cause in online travel. City tax, mandatory parking, child or pet supplements that only appear at the last step.

Fix: show the total price (or at least the extras) from the very first result. A higher, honest price beats a surprise at the end.

2. A higher price than elsewhere

The guest saw a lower price on Booking.com or Google. They reach your booking engine, see the difference and go back to the portal.

Fix: check parity every week and offer a direct perk. See how to make booking direct worthwhile.

3. Too long a process

Too many steps, too many fields, mandatory registration, double email confirmation.

Fix: cut steps to the minimum and ask only for the data you need. No mandatory account.

4. Lack of trust

The booking engine opens on an unknown domain with different branding, no logo, no security cues.

Fix: integrate the booking engine into your website; show your logo, contacts, reviews and secure payment logos.

5. Unclear or rigid cancellation terms

If guests don't understand what happens if plans change, they postpone the decision. Or they go where cancellation is free.

Fix: write the terms simply and offer at least one flexible option.

6. Awkward payment, or full payment upfront

Fix: offer several payment methods, including digital wallets, and consider deposits or pay-at-the-property options for flexible rates.

7. No availability, no alternative

The guest searches fully booked dates and only sees "no availability". End of story.

Fix: show alternative dates, other room types or a contact for special requests.

8. Technical problems

Errors, pages that don't load, buttons that don't work on some browsers or devices.

Fix: test the booking engine on different devices at least once a month and after every update.

How to recover people who abandoned

  • Remarketing: with cookie consent, you can show ads to people who visited the booking engine without booking, reminding them of the hotel and your direct perk.
  • Recovery emails: some booking engines can send a reminder to people who left their email before abandoning, if they gave consent. Recovery campaigns often have high open rates.
  • Quick contact: a WhatsApp button or "Need help?" in the booking engine catches people with a doubt.

How to measure abandonment

In your booking engine report or GA4, check:

  • availability searches;
  • room selection;
  • start of data entry;
  • completed bookings.

Frequently asked questions

What's a normal abandonment rate?

In online travel, abandonment is very high overall — around 80% of started bookings according to various benchmarks. More than the absolute figure, what matters is spotting the step where your drop-off is abnormal.

Is remarketing GDPR-compliant?

Yes, if you collect marketing cookie consent correctly and respect it. People who don't consent must not be tracked.

Should I use a timer or "last room available"?

Only if it's true. Fake urgency may work once, but it undermines trust — and in some cases it's considered an unfair commercial practice.
