"Book on our website: best price guaranteed!" Everyone writes it. And that's exactly why it no longer convinces anyone. Guests have learned that the price is often the same everywhere, and on Booking.com at least they have their app, their points and free cancellation.
To shift bookings to your website, you need to give guests a concrete, visible and credible reason. And it doesn't have to be a discount. In this article you'll find practical ideas for direct booking benefits and how to communicate them so they work.
Why a perk beats a discount
- It costs less than it's worth: a late check-out costs you almost nothing if the room isn't booked that night, but it's worth a lot to the guest.
- It can't be compared: a price is compared in a second; a package with parking and a welcome drink isn't.
- It doesn't lower perceived value: your price stays the same and the guest gets something extra.
- It sets you apart: Booking.com can't offer Mrs Maria's homemade cake.
Remember too what an OTA booking costs you: often 20–28% of its value, as we calculated in how much an OTA booking really costs you. You have plenty of room to offer a perk and still earn more.
15 direct-booking perk ideas
Practical perks
- Free or guaranteed parking.
- Early check-in or late check-out, subject to availability.
- Guaranteed room upgrade if available on arrival.
- Breakfast included when it isn't on the OTAs.
- Free cancellation until later than on the OTAs.
Experience perks
- A welcome drink or local product in the room.
- A front-row beach umbrella, a reserved pool lounger, discounted ski passes.
- A dinner or aperitif for stays of 3 nights or more.
- Free bikes.
- A personalised local guide written by the staff.
Relationship perks
- Choice of room (high floor, view, away from the lift).
- Direct WhatsApp contact with reception before arrival.
- A reserved rate for the next stay.
- Priority on requested dates for regular guests.
- A gift for anniversaries and birthdays mentioned in the booking.
You don't need them all. Pick two or three that fit your typical guest: families love parking and flexibility, couples the upgrade and drink, business travellers the late check-out.
How to communicate them (this is where you win)
A perk hidden on an inner page doesn't exist. Here's where to put it:
- on the homepage, above the fold: a simple strip with your 3 perks and an icon for each;
- in the booking engine: repeated next to the price, so guests remember them while comparing;
- in your replies to quote requests;
- on your Google profile, in amenities and photos (note: posts with offers or discounts aren't allowed on hotel profiles);
- in the hotel: a card in the room saying "Next time book on our website and get…".
Use concrete phrases. "Exclusive benefits" says nothing. "Free parking and 12 noon check-out when you book here" does.
And price? A small difference can help
You don't have to give up the price lever entirely. In the EU, the Digital Markets Act bans Booking.com from imposing rate parity: you can offer a slightly lower price on your website, say 5%. Combined with a perk, it makes direct clearly the best choice.
What matters is that your website price is never higher than the OTAs. Check it regularly.
Mistakes to avoid
- Perks you can't deliver (a "guaranteed" upgrade that isn't there): they create negative reviews.
- Small-print conditions that empty the perk of value.
- Perks only for those who ask: they must be automatic and written in the confirmation.
- Changing perks every month: consistency builds trust and word of mouth.
Frequently asked questions
Do I still need to guarantee the best price on my website?
Yes, at least equal. If guests find it cheaper on a portal, no perk will convince them. Many hotels add a guarantee: "If you find it cheaper elsewhere, we'll refund the difference."
Can I offer perks to Booking.com guests too?
You can, but that takes value away from direct. It's better to keep them for your website and, during the stay, let OTA guests know they can get them next time by booking with you.
How much should the perk be worth?
A practical rule: less than the commission you save, but enough to be noticed. On a €300 booking, a perk worth €20–30 to the guest (and costing you less) works well.
