A guest calls: "We're looking for you on Google Maps but can't find you." Or you search "hotel" in your area yourself and every competitor appears on the map except you. Annoying — and costly: many booking decisions start right on the map.
When a hotel isn't showing on Google Maps, there are two different situations: the profile doesn't exist or isn't visible, or it exists but doesn't rank for the searches that matter. Let's look at both.
Situation 1: your hotel can't be found even by name
The profile doesn't exist or isn't verified
Search your hotel's exact name on Google Maps. If it doesn't appear, the profile may not exist or may be awaiting verification. Create or claim it and complete verification. See your hotel's Google profile: what to complete and keep updated.
The profile is suspended
Google can suspend a profile it believes breaks the guidelines: keyword-stuffed name, invalid address, multiple profiles for the same property, suspicious edits. If you receive a suspension notice, fix the cause and request reinstatement through the proper process.
There are duplicates
Two profiles for the same hotel (perhaps an old one with a different name) confuse Google, which may show the wrong one or neither. Report the duplicate and request a merge or removal.
The pin is in the wrong place
If the pin sits in the middle of a road or in another neighbourhood, guests can't find you "where they're looking". Correct the location from your profile.
Situation 2: you appear for your name, but not for "hotel in [town]"
This is the most common case. The profile exists, but other hotels appear on the map for generic searches. Remember Google's three factors: relevance, distance, prominence.
Relevance: does Google understand what you are?
- Is your primary category "Hotel"?
- Are attributes complete (parking, pool, breakfast, pets…)?
- Does your linked website clearly describe your hotel type and area?
Distance: is the search near you?
If the user searches "hotel near the station" and you're 2 km away, it's normal for Google to show closer hotels first. But you can appear for other searches where your location is an advantage ("hotel near the beach", "quiet hotel with parking").
Prominence: how known and liked are you?
- Number, frequency and score of reviews.
- Replies to reviews.
- Photos and profile completeness.
- Mentions of your hotel on other sites (tourist office, guides, local press).
- Consistent name, address and phone everywhere.

A common problem: third-party edits
Anyone can suggest edits to your profile. Sometimes a user (or a competitor) reports wrong hours, category or location, and Google accepts them. Check your profile and suggested-edit notifications regularly. See wrong photos, amenities and location on Google: how to fix your hotel's presence.
How to check your map visibility
Map rankings change depending on where the searcher is. For a realistic picture:
- search on mobile from different locations (near the hotel, city centre, station);
- use incognito mode;
- note your main searches and your position every month.
There are also tools that simulate searches from different points in the city.
Frequently asked questions
How long after verification does a hotel appear on Google Maps?
A verified profile usually becomes visible quickly. Ranking well for generic searches takes longer and requires work on reviews and completeness.
Can I have two profiles, one for the hotel and one for the restaurant?
In some cases yes, if the restaurant is open to the public and has a distinct identity. Follow Google's guidelines for businesses with multiple departments.
Does paying for ads help me appear on the map?
Ads can appear on the map, but as ads. Organic position can't be bought.
