A guest arrives and says: "Google said you had an indoor pool." You don't. Or the first photo that appears when people search your hotel is a room before renovation, taken by a guest in 2017. Or the map pin sends guests down the wrong street.
Wrong information on Google is costly: disappointed expectations, negative reviews, guests getting lost. The good news is you can almost always fix your hotel's information on Google. Here's how.
Where wrong information comes from
- Edits suggested by users: anyone can propose changes, and some are accepted automatically.
- External sources: Google collects data from websites, OTAs and directories and uses it to update profiles.
- Photos uploaded by guests: they may be old, unrepresentative or not even of your hotel.
- Information never updated: services you no longer offer, changed times, a renovation never communicated.
- Inconsistencies across channels: if your website says one thing and Booking.com another, Google may pick the wrong one.
How to fix the main information
Amenities and attributes
From your profile dashboard, in the amenities or attributes section, update everything that has changed: pool, parking, pets, breakfast, air conditioning, accessibility. For hotels, attributes are edited from the dashboard or via API. Also make sure your website and OTAs show the same information.
Location and address
Edit the address and, if needed, move the pin to the exact entrance. If the car entrance differs from the pedestrian one, explain it in the practical information on your website.
Photos
- Upload new, high-quality photos: the more recent photos you upload, the less room old ones have.
- Report irrelevant photos uploaded by others (not yours, inappropriate, misleading) using the relevant feature.
- You can't always choose the main photo: Google selects which images to show, but a good, current set improves the odds that your best ones appear.
Name, phone, website
Correct them from the profile. If your name changed (rebrand), update your website, OTAs and social media too, or Google may revert to the old version.
Suggested edits: always check them
Google notifies you when someone proposes an edit or when it updates information from other sources. Your profile shows pending or applied edits. Accept the correct ones, reject the wrong ones. Do it regularly: if you let weeks go by, a wrong edit may stay visible.
If the correction doesn't stick
- check the profile is properly verified and that you own it;
- make sure your website and other sources show the correct information (Google looks for confirmation);
- use Google Business Profile support channels, attaching evidence (façade photos, documents, website links).
Prevention: consistency
The best way to avoid wrong information is for every channel to say the same thing: website, Google profile, OTAs, Tripadvisor, social media, local portals. When information is consistent, Google has fewer reasons to "correct" it from external sources. Deep dive: how to keep hotel information consistent across website, OTAs and maps.
This matters for AI assistants too: if online information is contradictory, AI answers about your hotel are likely to be wrong as well. See AI describes your hotel incorrectly: what can you do?.
The recommended routine
| Frequency | What to check |
|---|---|
| Weekly | Suggested-edit notifications, new user photos |
| Monthly | Amenities, check-in/out times, links, prices in the panel |
| Each season | Seasonal attributes (pool, restaurant, shuttle), new photos |
| After every renovation | Photos, descriptions and attributes on every channel |
Frequently asked questions
Can I delete photos uploaded by guests?
Not directly, but you can report them if they break content policies. The most effective strategy is uploading plenty of recent, high-quality photos.
Why does Google change information I entered myself?
Because it combines several sources to provide information it considers accurate. If other online sources say something different, Google may prefer them. That's why consistency matters.
Can reviews with wrong information be corrected?
You can't edit a review, but you can reply, politely clarifying the correct information — useful for later readers.
