A small independent hotel has an advantage chains can only dream of: it can decide fast. No committees, no procedures, no head-office approvals. If you figure out today what isn't working, you can change it tomorrow.
In this guide you'll find 10 practical strategies to increase your hotel's bookings, ordered from the cheapest to the ones that need some investment. You don't have to apply them all: pick the ones that solve your main problem.
First: more bookings, or better bookings?
More bookings don't always mean more profit. Filling the hotel at €60 a night with 18% commission can earn less than selling 75% of rooms at €85 through the direct channel. Always keep an eye on three numbers: occupancy, average rate and how much you actually keep for each room sold.
1. Make your website the best place to book
It's the most powerful and cheapest lever. Same or better price than the OTAs, an exclusive perk (parking, late check-out, breakfast in the room) and an always-visible "Book" button. Remember: in the EU, the Digital Markets Act bans Booking.com from imposing rate parity.
2. Simplify booking on smartphones
Most visits come from mobile, yet mobile conversion rates remain much lower than desktop. Cut fields, steps and last-minute surprises. Practical guide: hotel website on mobile: the obstacles that cost you bookings.
3. Treat your Google profile like your front desk
Up-to-date photos, complete amenities, replies to reviews, a link to your website and free booking links switched on. For many guests, the choice happens right there, without even opening your website.
4. Optimise the OTAs (don't abandon them)
OTAs bring guests you wouldn't reach on your own. Use them well: good photos, complete descriptions, consistent rates and restrictions, quick replies to messages. At our hotels in Rimini, optimising OTA profiles was a big part of the results we achieved on Booking.com. Deep dive: how to choose the right booking portals for a small hotel.
5. Reply to enquiries in minutes, not hours
People who write to three hotels often book with the first one that replies well. Prepare reply templates, use WhatsApp Business and always include an easy way to confirm.
6. Work on weak periods with different guests
If weekends are full and weekdays empty, the problem isn't "more marketing" — it's the wrong target. Companies, sports groups, events, trade fairs, off-season seniors: each needs a different message. See full at weekends, empty midweek: which guests to look for.
7. Bring back those who've already stayed
Returning guests cost less and spend more. Collect contacts (with consent), send a message after the stay and a targeted newsletter before the season. Often you just need to remember them at the right time.
8. Create pages for what people actually search
Nobody searches "Hotel Sole". They search "hotel near the trade fair", "hotel with parking in the city centre", "family hotel with pool". Create useful pages for these searches and your website will start to show up. Deep dive: SEO for independent hotels: which searches can bring bookings.
9. Use advertising to capture demand, not to persuade
On a small budget, start with people already searching: Google campaigns on your hotel name and specific local searches. Social media works better for specific offers and retargeting people who've already visited your website.
10. Measure and adjust every month
Every month check: revenue by channel, direct bookings, cost per booking from campaigns, reviews. If something hasn't moved after three months, change it.
Which strategy should you start with?

| Plenty of guests, nearly all from OTAs | 1, 2, 7 |
| Many enquiries, few confirmations | 5 |
| Full only in high season | 6, 9 |
| You don't know what works | 10 |
Frequently asked questions
What's the fastest way to increase hotel bookings?
In the short term: align your website prices and add a direct-booking perk, improve your OTA profile and reply faster to enquiries. These actions can show results within weeks.
Does lowering prices increase bookings?
Sometimes, but it often reduces overall profit and attracts price-only guests. Before lowering, check whether price is really the problem: we cover this in does lowering prices really increase bookings?.
How many OTAs should a small hotel use?
Usually two or three well-managed portals perform better than ten badly managed ones. Choose those that bring the guests you want.
