The report says: 1,200 clicks this month, €960 spent. Bookings from the website? Two. Maybe three. Something doesn't add up, and the temptation is to switch everything off and say "Google Ads doesn't work for hotels."
Before you do, it's worth understanding where the chain breaks. When a Google Ads campaign brings clicks but no bookings, the problem can be at four different points. Let's go through them in order.
Point 1: does tracking work?
Before looking for a problem in the campaign, check that the problem isn't in the measurement. It happens all the time that bookings exist but aren't recorded.
Checks to make:
- is the "booking" conversion set up in Google Ads (directly or imported from Google Analytics 4)?
- is the conversion tag installed on the booking engine's confirmation page, which is often on another domain?
- does cross-domain tracking (website → booking engine) work?
- is cookie consent handled correctly, without blocking everything?
Make a test booking by clicking one of your ads (or check with preview tools) and confirm it's recorded. See how to measure bookings generated by Google Ads.
Point 2: are the searches the right ones?
Open the search terms report in Google Ads: it shows the real searches that triggered your ads. There are often surprises:
- "hotel jobs rimini", "rimini hotel vacancies";
- "abandoned hotel rimini";
- "cheap hostel rimini" (for a hotel that isn't cheap);
- a competitor's name;
- searches in languages or countries that aren't your market.
Every click on these searches is wasted money. Add negative keywords and tighten match types. See how to avoid paying for clicks from people who won't book your hotel.
Check your location settings too: are you showing ads to people in your own town looking for a restaurant, instead of people looking for a hotel there?
Point 3: does the landing page convert?
If the searches are right but people don't book, the problem is after the click.
- Does the ad lead to the homepage instead of a relevant page? Someone searching "hotel near the trade fair" should land on the trade fair page, not the generic homepage. See which page to use for a hotel ad campaign.
- Is the page slow on mobile?
- Is the price competitive? Many users open Booking.com to compare after clicking. If your price is higher, they book there: you paid for the click, Booking.com collects the commission.
- Does the ad promise something the page doesn't deliver? ("20% off" and then the offer can't be found).
Point 4: is the campaign set up properly?
- Budget spread too thin across too many campaigns or keywords.
- Automated bidding without reliable conversion data (the algorithm optimises "blind").
- Generic ads, identical to competitors', with no clear perks.
- Wrong timing: ads running for dates already full or outside the booking window.
- Display network or search partners switched on unintentionally, bringing low-quality clicks.
A quick checklist
| Check | Yes / No |
|---|---|
| Are test bookings recorded in Google Ads? | |
| Have I looked at last month's search terms? | |
| Do I have an up-to-date negative keyword list? | |
| Do ads lead to relevant pages? | |
| Is my website price equal to or better than the OTAs? | |
| Does the page load in under 3 seconds on mobile? | |
| Are campaigns focused on the dates I need to sell? |
Frequently asked questions
How many clicks does it take to get a booking?
It depends on conversion rate: at 2%, you need 50 clicks per booking on average. With a website converting at 1%, you need 100. That's why the website matters as much as the campaign.
Could bookings arrive through other channels after the click?
Yes. Some users click the ad, then come back days later directly or phone you. Analytics and Google Ads may attribute these bookings differently: look at "assisted" conversions too.
Should I switch off the campaign if it brings no bookings after a month?
Check the four points first. Often fixing tracking or search terms is enough. If after the fixes your cost per booking is still higher than the OTAs', then yes, rethink the strategy.
